A Space for you to Process, Heal and Grow

My priority is to create a safe space for you to be yourself without judgment. Trust, honesty, and a willingness to work are important to the therapeutic relationship. I rely on empathy, compassion, and respect in our work together.

About me

My name is Amy and my pronouns are she/her/hers.

You will always see me if you work with me, but you may also meet Bunny, my chihuahua mix pup. She is a love, takes her job seriously, but can always be crated or not join us if you prefer a dog-free session.

I received my master’s in Counseling Education with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health from the University of Southern Maine. My bachelor’s degree is from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

My previous careers led me to counseling. Working in the food service industry taught me to manage my time under pressure. As a reporter and magazine food editor, I learned how to listen and retell a story accurately. As a nursing assistant, I cared for people respectfully, compassionately, and with dignity. I try to incorporate all of these skills to provide unconditional compassion, acceptance, and a safe space for my clients to grow and heal.

Sometimes, counseling is for a short while to help you sort out an issue or make something in your life feel more manageable. Sometimes, counseling uncovers issues you didn't realize were there. Together, we will create a plan and revise it as needed. I'm excited to get to know you and look forward to connecting soon.

Services

I love this work and am passionate about working with you, seeing your growth, and reaching greater understanding together. I know the journey can be difficult, it is often painful, and is rarely linear. But whatever your path looks like, we will do it together.

I work with couples and individual adults who want to be better versions of themselves, who are looking to gain self-awareness and heal from whatever is troubling them. You matter to me, and I will meet you where you are. I am an Emotion Focused therapist and use Gestalt and Gottman modalities. (We can talk more about what this means for you, but I like to put it here so if you want to look it up, you can!)

There are many reasons people seek counseling: to reduce anxiety and depression, overthinking and negative self-talk, or to increase self-awareness, and process life transitions. Couples often reach out because they want to improve their communication or listening skills, address conflicts, and intimacy or sexual concerns. My sessions are structured and transparent, and I invite you to take a part of the process every step of the way.

I am committed to providing an inclusive and affirming therapeutic space where members of the LGBTQIA+ community can feel seen, respected, and safe.

Clinical Interns

Within my practice, I offer a limited number of reduced-fee therapy sessions through a carefully curated supervised program for counselors-in-training. These clinicians are advanced graduate students who have been thoughtfully selected for their clinical readiness, presence, and commitment to meaningful therapeutic work.

Each therapist works under my close supervision, including weekly consultation and ongoing collaboration, in addition to the support they receive through their academic program and peer cohort. This layered approach ensures that clients receive intentional, well-supported care that reflects the standards of my practice.

Sessions are available at a reduced rate of $10–$50. Because of the personalized nature of this program, I connect directly with prospective clients to assess fit and ensure a thoughtful match with a student therapist.

If you’re interested in this option, I invite you to reach out for a brief consultation at akacounselingme@gmail.com

Hi, I'm Sarah (she/her), a counseling intern offering affordable therapy in Portland under the clinical supervision of Amy Anderson, LCPC. I work with teens and adults navigating concerns related to mood-regulation, relationships, wellness, identity, social challenges, trauma, and self-esteem.

My approach is flexible and adapts to your needs, whether you are seeking practical tools and immediate support for the present, or a deeper exploration of your past and identity. I am dedicated to providing a welcoming and affirming space for queer individuals. I am also experienced in counseling folks with developmental disabilities and feel very comfortable exploring and affirming neurodivergence in therapy.

Mental health doesn't exist in a vacuum; it is deeply impacted by external factors like systemic racism, economic instability, and the impact of trauma. I am committed to a practice of cultural humility, which means I work to acknowledge my own privileges and view you as the expert of your own story. If you feel we might be a good match, I hope you will reach out for an initial conversation.

If you would like to schedule a phone consultation, please reach out. I see clients in-person in my Portland office, or online through a secure telehealth platform. I look forward to hearing from you and starting this journey together.
